Kenya Airways Ltd is commonly known as Kenya Airways is the flag carrier of Kenya and was founded in 1977 after the dissolution of East African Airways. The main hub of this airline is situated at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with head office located in Embakasi, Nairobi. In 1955 it was fully owned by Government of Kenya but in 1996 it came in hand of private sector and currently it is successfully running under a public-private partnership. The largest shareholder of Kenya Airways is Government of Kenya which own 29.8% of its share and KLM which own its 26.73% stake in the company. The rest shares are owned by private owners. The shares are traded in the Nairobi Stock Exchange, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, and the Uganda Securities Exchange.

This airline is widely considered as one of the leading Sub-Saharan operators and in January 2013 it was ranked 4th among the top ten ones that operate in Africa by seat capacity after South African Airways. It covers more African destinations than any other carrier. In 2005, Kenya Airways became the first airline in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve the IOSA certification (IATA Operational Safety Audit), a rigorous safety standard. In 2010 again it achieved the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO).

Established in the year 1977, Kenya Airways was formed as a result of dissolution of East African Community and disunion of the jointly-held East African Airways. In the year 1986, the government of Kenya took the first step towards privatisation by publishing paper on the 'Economic Management for Renewed Growth'. This paper cleared the intentions of the government to make certain corporations free as these could run better under private sector. After exactly five years, in 1991, Philip Ndegwa started the proceedings for the privatisation of the airlines. With continued best-in-class services, the initial public offerings were issued in the month of March, 1996. In the year 1997, Kenya Airways added four Boeing 737-300 aircrafts that served various domestic and international routes. With each passing year, the airline managed to bag many awards.
